Leadership and Playtime Engagement with Beyond the Physical’s Play Leaders Programme

Schools are increasingly recognising the value of structured playtime in fostering social, emotional, and physical development. Beyond the Physical’s Play Leaders Programme provides a framework for students to take on leadership roles and create positive, engaging play environments for their peers. This initiative helps schools improve playtime experiences, encourage inclusivity, and support students in developing essential life skills.

What is the Play Leaders Programme?

The Play Leaders Programme is designed to equip children with the skills and confidence to take on leadership roles during school playtime. Students learn how to organise structured, inclusive, and engaging activities that encourage their peers to be active and cooperative. Through this initiative, children develop skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, contributing to a more collaborative school culture.

Throughout this year, we have delivered this training across the UK with great success. Schools have reported increased student engagement, improved social interactions, and more active playtime experiences as a result of the programme. Teachers and support staff have also observed a reduction in playground disputes and improved cooperation among students, leading to a more harmonious school environment.

Key Benefits of the Play Leaders Programme

  1. Developing Leadership Skills: Students gain confidence as they take responsibility for planning and leading activities, resolving conflicts, and fostering positive interactions.

  2. Encouraging Physical Activity: Structured play promotes movement and engagement, supporting both physical and mental well-being. Encouraging active play helps combat sedentary lifestyles and contributes to a healthier student body.

  3. Fostering Inclusion: Activities are designed to be accessible to all children, ensuring no one is left out. Play Leaders are trained to modify games so that children of all abilities can participate, strengthening peer relationships and school cohesion.

  4. Improving Social Skills: Play Leaders learn how to communicate effectively, collaborate, and think critically to manage playtime dynamics. These skills not only benefit them during playtimes but also transfer into their classroom interactions and future leadership roles.

  5. Enhancing School Culture: A structured play environment leads to more harmonious playtimes, stronger peer relationships, and improved overall student morale. When children feel safe and included, they are more likely to engage positively with their learning and school community. Visit our Play Leaders page

Whole-School Benefits

The Play Leaders Programme not only benefits the participating students but also has a wider impact on the whole school community. Schools that implement this programme often see:

  • A Positive Playtime Culture: With structured activities in place, playtimes become more purposeful, reducing conflicts and disruptive behaviour. Schools have reported fewer incidents of bullying and greater cooperation among students.

  • Improved Behaviour Across the School: Encouraging leadership and teamwork during play helps develop a sense of responsibility that carries over into the classroom. Teachers notice students applying the skills they’ve learned in structured play to group work and classroom discussions.

  • Stronger Peer Relationships: By promoting inclusion and cooperative play, students form positive friendships and support networks. This fosters a school culture where kindness and teamwork are valued.

  • Increased Staff Confidence in Managing Playtime: Teachers and lunchtime supervisors benefit from a more structured approach, easing their workload and improving overall supervision. Play Leaders take ownership of games and activities, allowing staff to focus on supporting students in need.

  • Better Engagement in Learning: Students who experience active, structured play return to the classroom more focused and ready to learn. Research suggests that active play can boost cognitive function, improving concentration and academic performance.

  • Reducing Teacher Workload: Beyond the Physical takes the stress out of implementing the programme by providing ready-made timetables, structured resources, and ongoing support. Schools benefit from a clear plan that is easy to implement, reducing the administrative burden on staff.

What Does the Training Involve?

Our Play Leader Training is structured around the Share, Create, Play framework. This approach guides students through:

  • Sharing: Understanding the role of a leader and learning how to engage and support their peers.

  • Creating: Designing and adapting games to ensure inclusivity and enjoyment for all participants.

  • Playing: Leading activities confidently, managing group dynamics, and fostering teamwork.

Training sessions include practical, hands-on activities where students can practise leading games and receive constructive feedback. By the end of the training, Play Leaders feel prepared and excited to take on their new responsibilities.

Our Play Leader team take all the stress out of the process by providing the training, on-going support, resource materials, timetabling and more!
